Why do runners find it so hard to slow down their runs and run “at an easy effort?” Is there a running myth that running slowly will make you a “slow runner?” Is it because we have constantly or continue to be shouted at to run faster/keep up or, my personal favourite, “if you stopped talking you could run faster!” Or are apps like Strava creating obsessive behaviours that are having an impact on how we train?
Couldn’t agree more. I ran my second fastest marathon ever a few weekends ago, 11 years after I PR’d. I only missed that 2:58:43 PR by less than two minutes. And trained only 60 miles a week instead of 70. Biggest single difference between 2013 and 2024? I read Matt Fitzgerald’s 80/20 Running and consciously took the pace of my easy runs and recovery runs down to really slow, really. Had fewer strains, injuries (none). I’m a believer.
