So that’s a wrap on another July! Hard to believe but the same month in which here in the UK we both had the heating on/got our winter coats back out, and now are so hot that the only acceptable food is an ice lolly…
Run of the Month
This is a photo of our RunVerity club run this past weekend, where members had the option to be part of a relay team or just run the miles they needed. We also said goodbye to one of our incredible coaches, Charlie. There was tea and cake afterwards, it was a lovely morning all round!
Substack Read
This is a brilliant piece from
about what people (ok, men) say when a female passes them on a bike. This happens a lot in running as well, in my experience. I remember when I passed some fellow club runners (before RV) when running Paris marathon and they asked if I’d caught a bus to catch them up (!)Book Recommendation
I’m currently reading and loving “Better, Faster, Farther; How Running Changed Everything We Know About Women” by Maggie Mertens. It’s brilliant as it discuss’s the history of women in sport and how women have run without sports bras (which weren’t invented until 1977) and disguised as men. They faced down doctors who put them on bed rest and newspaper reports that said women collapsed if they ran a mere eight hundred meters (just two laps around the track). Still today, women face relentless attention to their bodies in sport- is she too strong, too masculine? Is she even really a woman? And did you know that in 2011, Paula Radcliffe’s biggest victory was questioned. Her world-record marathon in 2 hours, 15 mins and 25 secs would be considered a “world best” instead of an official record. Why? Because there were male pace runners, who run a portion of a race at a certain pace so runners can see how fast they’re going at the race. A woman running next to a man, according to the International Association of Athletics Federations, made women “artificially” faster! Such a great read, thoroughly recommend it! An
