This reminded me of my thoughts in the final 400 metres of a my first marathon. Someone told me that a person who finishes a marathon has more in common with every other finisher—regardless of speed or background—than they do with anyone in the crowd

Every finisher has endured the same distance, the same wall (usually around mile 20), and the same mental/physical battle.

Whether they finished in 2:06 or 6:02 they share the language of grit.

Spectators cheer, but only finishers truly understand the sacrifice—months of training, blisters, and the surreal mix of pain and euphoria at the finish line.

So glad I got to enjoy running the last running boom (or perhaps the one before that ;-)) as I’m not sure I’d cope with the additional burden of social interaction. Which, after all, is probably why I started running in the first place and didn’t do team sports😊
